Our 1/2 HP Water Chiller comes with a titanium heat exchanger. A titanium heat exchanger keeps copper from coming into contact with your water. Because toxic levels of copper can build up in water being used for long periods of time, copper heat exchangers aren’t recommended for use in a closed loop aquarium setup. The use of titanium = Reef Tank Safe!

Pump and Controller Recommendation
- Pump: Danner Mag-drive 500gph – 1800gph. Other pumps may be acceptable, however they need to be rated for less than 10psi max pressure. If you’re using a different pool/spa pump or any other pump rated in horsepower please talk with our tech support first. There is typically a simple work around that allows our chillers to provide cooling to systems which operate at higher pressures. We would be more than happy to help you determine the best method of installation for your system. - Digital Controller: The controller constantly monitors your systems incoming water temperature, therefore, water flow is needed at all times in order for it to successfully read current temperatures. When your systems water temperature moves above your desired set point, the controller tells the compressor and fan to turn on and begin cooling the water. Once your desired set point temperature is reached, the compressor and fan will turn off.

I previously purchased a hydrofsrm active aqua 1/4 hp chiller, which was not only unable to handle the required gph pump for my system, but failed to cool effectively and had issues blowing fuses. I returned it and ordered this, and wow. Water temps down from 78 degrees to a nice 68 degrees, easy to setup and install. Unit is also less obtrusive, and runs quietly. Best purchase i could’ve made for my garden, I will recommend this to anyone that will listen!

I bought one of these for my DIY small scale recirculating system for hatching trout eggs and rearing them to four to five inches before releasing them into a flow through outdoor pond. Worked great! I was able to keep water temps in the low to middle 50’s F. from an ambient temperature in my basement of the low to upper 60’s.
I’m getting ready to run it again for another few months of my second hatch of trout eggs.
The price also much was better than a lot of chillers out there I was looking at. Unfortunately I’m not sure what size it is (hp) as I can’t find that on the model anywhere.

Great chiller!! I’ve used a few other brands over the years and the penguin is by far the best I’ve used. No problem keepin 150 gallons @ 66 degrees in 90 degree ambient, and still cycle. Very impressed.

I’ve been using the 1/2 hp for around a year now on my man cave 125 gallon fish tank. Water was mid 90s now I keep upper 70s and the machine runs about 2 min every 30 min or so and decently quiet about like a fan kicking on.
