Our 1/2 HP HE Water Chiller comes with a titanium heat exchanger. A titanium heat exchanger keeps copper from coming into contact with your water. Because toxic levels of copper can build up in water being used for long periods of time, copper heat exchangers aren’t recommended for use in a closed loop aquarium setup. The use of titanium = Reef Tank Safe!
Pump and Controller Recommendation
- Pump: Danner Mag-drive 500gph – 1800gph. Other pumps may be acceptable, however they need to be rated for less than 10psi max pressure. If you’re using a different pool/spa pump or any other pump rated in horsepower please talk with our tech support first. There is typically a simple work around that allows our chillers to provide cooling to systems which operate at higher pressures. We would be more than happy to help you determine the best method of installation for your system. Be sure and visit our “Accessories” web page to view our selection of pumps and accessory packages available.
- Digital Controller: The controller constantly monitors your systems incoming water temperature, therefore, water flow is needed at all times in order for it to successfully read current temperatures. When your systems water temperature moves above your desired set point, the controller tells the compressor and fan to turn on and begin cooling the water. Once your desired set point temperature is reached, the compressor and fan will turn off.
- High Efficiency: HE models utilize a larger titanium coil compared to the standard version. The larger coil offers more contact surface area and contact time to provide more cooling. Both models run the same compressor, which means their power draw is the same. The high efficiency model is providing more cooling without any extra power consumption.

Live in Birmingham, AL have this unit hooked up to my 150G display reef aquarium. The chiller is located in my garage and set to 76deg and has no problems in the middle of summer keeping up no problems. It was a super easy setup just make sure you have the space for it. Excellent chiller and I would happily buy again.

I purchased a 1/2 HP chiller and installed it only to find out it went to “error” on the readout after a few minutes. Followed the instructions to check if the sensor was loose, which it wasn’t. Penguin replaced the unit at no cost. The new one works flawlessly and unlike the first one, it’s installed properly. I owe Penquin an apology for my “error” not theirs. I’ll be purchasing more from them without hesitation. Very good people to work with.

Purchased the 1/2 HP (HE) unit for use in a chill tub. (Plunge tank) I have a 150 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank which is in a small 7 x 7 room in an exterior shed. The room was 70 degrees and water started out tap cold at 60, set the temp to 52. The unit chugged along and quickly dropped the water temp. I have the exterior of the tub insulated and have a make shift cover on it. I figure this saved me many $1000 over a prebuilt chill tub. I am very happy with this for my application.

I’ve been taking a cold plunge every morning for 60 days now. Started out at 56F for 3 minutes and now do 43F for 5m40s. The 1/2 HP HE Penguin Chiller works like a champ. I will be going as low as goes soon (I’ve heard it’s around 38F). I’ll report back when I find out what the coldest temperature is. I live in Montana and it’s Winter. I have the tub located indoors in a laundry room. I keep the window cracked open to keep the room cool, ventilated, etc. The room temperature is anywhere between 56F – 70F. Most of the time around 65F. The chiller maintains the water temperature within 2F while I’m in the tub and quickly brings it back down to setpoint after I get out of the tub. I’d estimate the cost of electricity for the chiller and pump that runs continuously at $30-$40 a month. The health benefits are worth it. Loving it!
