Whether you are new to cold therapy or a seasoned pro, you are likely doing it for the benefits that exposure to cold offers rather than the physical workout you’ll get from lugging all the ice needed to keep up with it.  Lets face it – keeping up with the amount of ice needed to keep a barrel cold can get to be quite the burden.  Our chiller will keep your barrel cold effortlessly, this should lead to more consistent and frequent usage.    Make the most out of your barrel by by going ICELESS!

The chiller can reach into the low 40°F, even down into high 30°F with the right conditions.  Ambient temps and sun exposure account for the majority of the heat load on a cold therapy tub (your body heat is insignificant compared to the sun). Reducing the external heat load will improve chiller performance.  Low to mid 40°F should be possible on a barrel setup even in full sun / less than ideal conditions.

We do not recommend putting the chiller in an area that cannot get wet as the chiller, along with the tubing, will produce condensation.

If you ever notice your system does not have flow, or if you are questioning whether the flow you’re seeing is normal, immediately unplug the chiller & contact support@penguinchillers.com

In any application that requires a water chiller, strong flow is crucial. If you have some flow throughout the system, but not enough, water will freeze inside of the chiller.

Damage caused by slow flow throughout the system due to improper setup or maintenance will not be covered under the manufacturer warranty.

Cost to Run (lower than you’d expect):

At $0.12/KWh the monthly cost of operation should be around $18-$28/month.  The compressor and fan only turn on when cooling is needed, once the water reaches your set point they turn off and only the low wattage pump continues to run.

A common question we get revolves around setting the chiller up on a timer. Ideally, you’ll want to keep the water cold at all times. There are a few reasons for this –

  1. Cold water keeps bacteria (slimy walls) largely under control by slowing or stopping their growth.  This significantly reduces the amount of maintenance needed to keep your water clean for longer periods of time. This means less frequent water changes and that much lower levels of sanitizer being an effective dose (chlorine/hydrogen peroxide/etc.).
  2. If you are using it on a regular basis the amount of potential power savings will be fairly insignificant, the heat it would gain in the “off” period still needs to be removed when you turn it back on. So, if running is normally cost $18-$28/month you might be able to save $3-$5/month. However, you will have to change water and the filter more often, so it is unlikely to be a net cost savings.
  3. When you cut power to the chiller you also cut power to the pump.  Pumps get the most wear and tear during startup, that’s when a pump is most likely to fail as well. Cycling the power to the chiller is just adding unnecessary wear and tear to the pump.

I bought this chiller for my cold plunge “Ice Barrel 300” and it works like a charm. Highly recommended. Made in the USA and tech support is great.

I bought this 4 months ago for an ice barrel and absolutely love it. I use it 1-3x a day. It’s simple to set up, and, although expensive, this is the cheapest and best set up I’ve found so far. A lot of others are huge, permanent baths that cost 10-20k. This is portable, as good and a $3k set up. Not cheap, but considering how often I plunge, the cost is nominal.

Penguin is pretty quiet and works perfectly. I had a little quirk with the spot, and customer service handled it within hours and sent a new one. Excellent American company. Recommend for athletes and wim hof practitioners.

I’ve had my chiller for 6 months now and am extremely happy, I live in California and during the summer temps can get into the upper 90’s during summer and the chiller kept my water cool the entire time I set mine between 50-40 degrees. I’ve had some minor problems with air getting into the lines and affecting the outflow but customer service was awesome and helped me resolve this issue. I highly recommend this chiller.

I live in Memphis TN. The summers here are blazing hot:????. I got this chiller and the connection to link up to my ice barrel. Guys this thing is amazing. The set up is easy and I’m done buying ice. If you live in a hot climate and you want ice cold water on demand, well this is your choice. This and the fact it’s made right here in the USA ???????? was icing on the cake. If you have a gym or take daily plunges you can’t beat this set up!

  5. Steve (verified owner)

1 week in and we love it so far. We went with the 300 series and the 300 setup using the existing ports of the Ice Barrel. So far we not had any issues, it is pretty quiet when chilling and almost silent when just the pump is going. There seems to be a good flow from the top of the barrel when the pump is running so it is cycling the water really well.

It is November here in AZ so we will see how it works in July as well. So far, very happy with this purchase.

  6. Donald Demuth (verified owner)

I had the Ice Barrel Chiller for over a year and I’d recommend it to anyone. I live in Austin TX where the summers are consistently in the 90s and I was able to keep the water temp around 48 degrees by preference. During the cooler mornings it could drop even lower but in the evenings the water would get to the low 50s. Eventually I made my own barrel wrap (after discussing it on YouTube) to hold the water temp lower and it worked extremely well. Consistent 48 all day long and I could even get it to hold at 45 or 42, but my wife and son don’t enjoy it that cold. I see Penguin has their own barrel wrap and I’m tempted to try it after my own version wears out.

Also, right before a year of ownership my unit started to short before the chiller engaged. It literally took an email and a ONE WEEK to get the unit FedEx’d, fixed, and returned. The service was amazing and I know this would not have happened if I bought one of those other chillers not made in the USA. The penguin might be a little bit more expensive than some of the alternatives, but at least it will never become a boat anchor or dead weight. Buy with confidence and thank you for keeping my unit working in top notch shape!
